My name is Leo Boucher, I’m a sailor from Annapolis, Maryland. Please help me continue competing at the highest level and reach my goal of qualifying for the 2028 Olympics Games in Los Angeles .
As a child at West River Sailing Club, I learned the wind was my friend while sailing Optis with my sister, Pilar. In high school, I transitioned into the Laser Radial and started spending more time on the water at Severn Sailing Association in Annapolis, Maryland. Throughout my teenage years, I competitively raced the Laser Radial, now called the ILCA 6, in as many youth events as possible. During that time, I joined U.S. Sailing’s Olympic Development Team and competed in two Radial Youth Worlds. The Radial Youth Worlds were great experiences that opened my eyes to the high level of sailing outside of the United States.
When I turned 18, I moved to the Laser Full Rig, now called the ILCA 7. As similar as the ILCA 6 is to the ILCA 7, advancing to the larger rig, and racing in the ILCA 7 fleet, demonstrated far more challenges than I had originally expected.
As a Full Rig sailor, I focus on fitness and strength. Early in my Full Rig sailing career, I had the opportunity to meet Tom Burton, the 2016 Laser Full Rig Gold medalist. Tom stressed to me the importance of total fitness in Laser sailing. In 2020, I had the opportunity to sail in the Laser World Championship in Melbourne, Australia. Competing in a World Championship prior to an Olympic year, was a life-changing event. My goal was to learn as much as I could from the world-class sailors I competed against.
In 2021, I won the North Americans at the SFYC in San Francisco, which qualified me for the 2021 Youth Pan-American Games in Columbia. A year later, I won the ILCA North Americans at CORK in Kingston, Ontario.
Currently, I’m a Senior at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. At St. Mary’s, I am the captain of the Varsity Sailing team. In 2019 and 2021, I won the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association Singlehanded National Championships. Additionally, I am a two-time Collegiate Sailing All-American Honorable Mention.
As an African American collegiate sailor and Olympic hopeful, I want to use my talents on the water and in the classroom to inspire young Black and Brown students. Studying Economics has taught me that generational wealth is measured in more than just dollars and cents. My wealth comes from the support of my community and the contributions I can give back to aspiring young sailors of color. I am fortunate to be supported by a diverse community of sailors, friends, and family in Annapolis, Maryland. I have had to borrow my inspiration from Black athletes who found their success in other athletic activities due to the lack of representation in sailing. The financial bar to entry in sailing is high, thus preventing many underserved communities from participating in our sport. After my successful Olympic campaign, I hope to leverage my background in economics, and the connections I make in the sailing community, to bridge the financial barriers that prevent underserved youth from participating in sailing.
I look forward to your support to help achieve these goals.
